mom

Hello,

It’s Carolyn again.

Hope you are doing well. We just got back from a great trip, this time a cruise to the Panama Canal. And what an amazing wonder it was! We had a fabulous time and will surely remember it forever, especially the sight of the gates to the locks opening and the ship rising, rising to the next level. It’s 100 years old and works flawlessly. Mom is 87 and still loves to cruise. She did very well and even left us behind a couple times to go on some excursions with her new friends. We’d all love to be that active at her age, right?

Staying active with them is one of the most important ways we can help our aging parents. Another BIG one is protection. My husband, Mikol, and I have been actively involved with promoting protection of aging parents from financial abuse for some time.

A colleague, Cynthia Healy, president and founder of Security Financial Advisors came up with an acronym that we’ve found very useful and we’d like to share it with you…

S-C-A-M

S- Surround yourself with family and friends. Don’t isolate yourself.
C-Careful with caregivers. Do your own background checks of caregivers even if they come from an agency.
A-Ask for help from professionals, such as accountants, attorneys, bankers and doctors. Build a team so you will always have the expert advice you need, right when you need it.
M-Maintain security over your personal information.

Out of all 4, being Careful with caregivers is definitely one of the most overlooked. Doing your own background check when you want to hire a home care worker is fast, easy, and affordable, and is something we can’t emphasize enough! The whole thing can be done through the internet with a credit card. Here’s an example of an internet background check service.

If your mom, or anyone you love wants to hire a caregiver, even part time, even if it’s someone you know, spend the money, $50-$100, and get the records check. For the value and peace of mind you get it is well worth it to protect your aging parent.

So, that’s it for now. We wish every mother out there a great Mother’s Day, and we especially wish all those who are caring for their elderly moms a great Mother’s Day, too. All the best on Sunday from AgingParents.com.

P.S. Let us hear from you. Send us your questions, comments, concerns, even just to say hi. We look forward to it.
